Good to know about Fort Branch
- History and water source. The town says Fort Branch began in 1811 as one of a series of frontier forts (two 2-story block houses inside a stockade) and was named for a flowing 'branch' of spring water that supplied the fort; the town says those springs now furnish water for the Fort Branch municipal water system. - Sump pump / downspout discharge ban. A 2024 Fort Branch ordinance (2024-1) makes it unlawful to discharge water from downspouts, storm drainage pipes, subsurface drains or sump pump outlets into streets or other public rights-of-way; violators get written notice and 48 hours to fix it, and fines can reach $2,500 for a first violation, with higher fines for repeat violations. - Backflow prevention rules. Fort Branch's cross-connection rules (Ordinance 2025-8) say reduced-pressure backflow preventers may not be installed below ground level, list facilities such as restaurants, nursing homes, car washes and apartments with fire suppression as needing backflow devices, and let the water superintendent require any customer to install and test an approved device at the customer's expense. - Sewer and stormwater history. Fort Branch's ordinance list shows a 1939 ordinance authorizing construction of the town's sewerage system and sewage treatment plant, a 1989 ordinance regulating connections to public and private sewers and drains, and a Department of Storm Water Management created in 2011, with a stormwater fee set in 2015.
